Category: Geeks r Us
Just curious. Since we all don't have a million dollars, or even if it seems reasonable, we all can't have what would really benefit us in the technical world if you are a geek and are taking courses to advance your knowledge like me. So my question is, do any of you have a technology wish list? Here is mine:
Macbook $1100
external Blueray drive $100 maybe less
usb turn table $160
Olympus ds30 digital recorder $160
Braille Plus $1300
Doubletalk LT external synth $300
Also, if you do have a technology wish list, what are you doing to get to your goals of obtaining what you want? I'm trying to sell some of the older stuff I have..
A new zSeries mainframe with 64 processors and 512 gigs of ram. Also a couple terabytes of dasdy storage. Cost several million.
a mac laptop, windows laptop, and a new cell phone with talks on it. If i ever got the mac or windows laptops, i'd put something like virtual box, or something so i could run ubuntu. O, and an actual microphone. Cody knows what I am talking about. :)
Yeah I wouldn't mind upgrading my server to 4 gigs of ram and 3 terrabite drives and overclock my processors.
Overclocking is fine, as long as you don't over do it, and CDog, just 4 gb ram, thought you would've wanted more, considering you run Linux, and windows 64 bit don't wirk with any known screen reader, but, your choice, not mine.
My technology wish list includes:
Braille note empower BT 32 with GPS,
About 1 GB Ram,
A USB headset,
Jaws 9.0, A lot of Audio Games, just don't know what ones though, A nokia 6682 with talks, An olimpus recorder, I've heard good things about the DS 50, Talking caller id. Quite expensive. Everyone wants things, don't they?
a one terabyte external hard drive for all my music and more. a digital recorder with a pair of decent microphones, and one of those knfb readers.
hmm'mm'mm'mm. A dectalk express (or usb) lol. An upgrade on my bn from 18 to 32 cells, a dedicated server maybe... That's all I can think of now - I am tired lol.
well I would have wanted more ram in that server but 4 gigs is all it would handle. Windows 64 bit? kidding right? Linux would be the only thing that will ever go on it.
I want more ram! i got 256 mb i need about a gig and i also want a back up comp so this one can be retired, this laptop done a lot for me, but she has seen better days, hell she needs to have a usb port fixed her hd reformated and a fresh install of everything!
Victor Reader Stream: $329
and either:
Nokia N82: $500
KNFB Reader software: $1595
Talks transfer license: $100 or so
or:
Windows Mobile smartphone with 3g connectivity, usable web browser, and accessible ssh client: $priceless
Unlimited data plan: $alot
Mobile Speak: $200 or so
Yikes! Well, I really need mor RAM on this laptop, plus a cheaper way to restore full functionality to my audio jack. We can have it resoldered for around £100 or $200, but mum's already having kittens about it, but hey, it's my money after all.
Jen.
Let's see.....I want one of the new focus Braille displays. I'm still using an old focus 44 at the moment. I'd also like either a BrailleNote Empower with a 32 cell display or a Voice sense with a bluetooth display, probably a Braille Ino. That way I could use it with my laptop too, which would iliminate the need for the new focus, but as I haven't even come close to spending this imaginary million dollars yet, I think I'll just get both. I also want the new KNFB reader, and a studio mic and studio monitor headset for my computer. What else....Cakewalk with the nifty CakeTalking scripts, and another gig of ram, and whatever other hardware tune ups I could get on this workhorse of a laptop.
Mike,
I think a real mic would do you some good. There not that expensive.
I want:
An accessible cell phone
Talking caller ID for the landline phones so I can tell who's calling like everyone else ho is sighted here can
Braille+
New computer with a lot of wram and a good processor. Finally, my own vercopy of JAWS 9.
That's all I can think of for now.
Jeffrey
Hi,
one more thing I want is a Mac (a new one but I don't care what model it is.)
Jeffrey
I want a Macbook Pro...I'd sell my Macbook if I got a pro, and since we're dreaming, I want a braille display to go with it, maybe just a PacMate display...Nothing serious of course.
Yamaha Motif XS8 synthesizer, and a Hammond new B3.
m1330 with the thin display
4gb ram even though win 32 can only support 3
200 7200 rpm hd, I'd love the 64ssd however, thats a bit too little atm; if they had at least 128gb, why not.
The air card where I can get true wireless internet, none of this being tied to a router/hotspot crap.
Going to get my m c s e so the dept of rehab will hook me up with that system, in terms of how I'm going to obtain it. Then I'll go for my security+ cert, all and all, I hope to achieve the security in 2 years, after my m c s e
But for a dream system.
a mini tower with 1.6 tb ssd. Yes, a 1.6 tb ssd does exists, its just marketed for the military atm.
And why doesn't fs come out with jaws for windows xp 64bit system already, ffs.
A house with 4 bd, 2bath, huge yard, marble floors/sinks/counter, a 24/7 maid, a personal maintenance crew, a personal shef, and a driver.
What am I doing to get all that? Buying lottery tickets :=P
hmm my list includes the following,
New windows laptop
Levelstar Icon Mobal Manager $2000
talking phone
JFW 9.0
USB mic/headset
Trecker GPS
Victor reader stream
and an external hard drive
of course, I am glad my parents go to casinos, hahaha, and for the Levelstar, one of my teachers is talking to someone about getting me one of my own
Oh, and I'd love a laptop.
What I would like to have: KNFB Reader Mobile software already have the n82 with MSP, a MacBook, got the 20 inch IMac and the macbook would be helpful and of course, will this ever happen? you did say wishlist right? Office applications accessible to voiceover by January of 09. this could take the shape of either iworks, open office or well, guess Microsoft Office. Now, there's a wish for ya.
my wish list includes: a laptop and jaws 9
I know, I know. I'm resurrecting another topic. Anyway, I want:
Braille Plus
Focus 40 for my computer
A good laptop full of rlots of ram, a nice sound card, gigs of storage, built-in wireless, A CD/DVD player/burner, an SDHC slot, and much more that I can't think of
A Victor Reader Stream
A BrailleNote mPower
An accessible cell phone that actually could tell me what I'm doing (unlike the current one I have that tells me impertinent information; stupid Verizon)
A Bluetooth headset with Mic
A year's subscription to Audible.com so I can put lots of books on my VR Stream
A Braille Sense Plus
I'm a tech nut, what can I say. Blame it on my husband, he's totally in to computers.
oh yes, can't forget the laptop. I think that would work better than my PAC Mate when it comes to windows Live messenger.
Ok, a few categories here.
New Tech
The KNFB Reader and the N82 phone.
A lazer cane.
A Greek synthesizer for my Macbook. That one's coming out in November.
An accessible (that means extremely simple) chordless Skype usb phone.
A wireless or bluetooth headset or at least headphones cause I hate chords.
Good speakers to plug into my computer that don't require me to plug them into the wall.
Old Tech
An Optican. Please?
A Keynote Companion.
A motherboard for my XP laptop.
An Apollo multilingual speech synthesizer (internal is ideal).
The chord for the Keynote Voicecard synthesizer cause stupid me lost mine.
A reel to reel player.
A needle for the 51-year-old record player that I just got. It does 78 rpms! Woo hoo!
Ink ribbon for my dot matrics printer.
Braille Blazer or a newer embosser but must speak and be easy to use. Wanna get rid of my Versapoint Duo.
My Dream Machine
A computer that has one male and one female serial port, a parallel port, a pcmcia card slot, a built-in 56k modem and wireless internet access, 5.25 floppy drive, 3.5 floppy drive, cd rom, MS DOS (no later than 6.2 and no earlier than 5.0), WP 5.1 and room for more programs and games, an extra built-in hard disk for Windows XP and one for Leopard. Oh yeah, and throw in an enhansed 101 key keyboard or a Windows one with l-shaped enter key.
Not alot, I know. *smile*

Ok, i remember this topic. I got the microphone, and will be getting my own laptop in a few days. Now only for the mac. Yeah, that's not happening any time soon, or maybe I could ask cody for something...
Lets See...
A computer for music production which would include,
a quad core processor
4 GB of ram
2TB Hard drive
I wouldn't mind getting a Lespaul Studio either. they cost around six grand. That's not neciserally tech though.
Nice one, chris. Actually I do believe they make chordless skype phones you need to get them through the skype store if I'm not mistaken. Or you might be able to get some sort of box to convert your ome phone into a skype phone. I know there is something out there.
Seems like we all pretty much have the same wishlist more or less. Nice, SKPoet!
I would like a 42 inch flat pannel tv, a new digital camera, a Dell XPS 520, my pacmate upgraded to an Omni, the KNFB Reader, and new cords for my braille printer lost them
damn looks like I got most everything on everyones list. except the obvious deram servers.
but lets see, I have litterally 21 fully fuctional cell phones, which 9 are accessible and talking. I have had a pacmate but thought it was garbage so I sold it for 500 dollars. I had a braille note pk but again garbage so I sold it for 3000. I have a macbook, a mac mini, a plantronix usb headset, and more cell phone accessories you can shake a stick at.
I also got a little piddly widdly windows box at home on the desk some kind of 1.3 with 256 of ram.
what I'd like to have now, a n75, e51, e61, asus p series pda pocket pc phone, and a hp ipaq pocket pc phone.
lets see my wish list is this:
new phone like the E65, or even better the N82. do not care about the reading software just want the phone. would love a desktp with 2 gigs of ram, big hard drive, and alot of other lovely features. I also would love a audio software like goldwave or soundforge. I don't want much I guess.
Marsha
e65 is a nice phone I wouldn't mind having something like that. btw my reason for wanting e 51, 61 is for wifi. n82 sucks because it doesn't have a keyboard, but the n75 doesn't but it has the mp3 player on the screen. btw I found the numlock key on the e62
Ok BlindTechsNet, now I gotta tease you. Do you have a Teletac phone or other large cell phone that I can swipe off you? I hate these small phones, though mine is pretty simple and decent. If you have an Optican, consider it sold. lol
As for skype phones, here's a nice article on choices.
http://www.amperordirect.com/pc/r-skype-voip/help-skype-phone.html
They also have one that explains how to use a landline with skype, plus they sell all sorts of usb phones, corded and cordless. The only thing is that most have alot of features and are inaccessible.
I am definitely a failed techy or a pseudo geek or something. Make my living teaching others to use the stuff and have pretty much started the backwards slide myself. Somewhere at the top of the wish list I am not ever going to have is another person who will just make everything work for me when I need it because I do *not* enjoy that process at all even though I can do it.
I have a vivid memory of a conversation by phone with a perfect stranger I purchased something from who was telling me he and his wife wanted to adopt a kid but his wife pointed out the high cost of his assistive tech and that they could afford the kid or the technology but not both.
He went for the technology.
I went for the kid.
And getting the kid rather late in her life, it seems I am on my way to getting a grandkid.
So, that plus just plain not liking the lack of intuitiveness or immediacy in the new stuff, and looking at all the nice things I went into debt over that are sitting on a shelf, I am using a laptop with some pieces missing that was given to me and a Braille 'n speak that I purchased used for about $100. The nice technology I have but still can't make do all I want is a Braileiant 40 cell display and the one hardy workhorse that I love and hope to have forever is my uliet embosser.
So, the wish list is sort of a hypothetical musing ...
And what I wish for involves that person I mentioned before who will make everything work for me. I want a wearable computer in the old style that proper geeks made themselves that will weigh a couple of pounds at most, fit nicely into a fanny pack with the braille display I already have, run 16 hours on a battery, be operable using two keyboards - one a little qwerty for when I am sitting and have time and a second that involves I one-handed chorded system I can just code myself based on braille but which doesn't exist anywhere in real life. And it will have a full set of ports including a serial port for connecting with old stuff and wireless, bluettooth, etc. to connect with the new. Let's throw in a little bay for my cell phone so it can act as a modem. A simple phone that will work through the same headset as the computer. And while I'm imagining, I'd like to use the keynote gold pcmcia synthesizer that I love the speech on and bought once for a mere $1100 before it became useless. I guess I'd have to have the wonder geek rig me up something so I can print to my old embosser but with blue tooth adapter so I can be crashed out in bed and emboss c for the next day in the other room.
I'd have all the Microsoft crappy basics just because I need to interface with that part of the world, a kind of mini-Braille 'n speak in the form of a software package that gives me all the intuitiveness for writing and accessing my information the way I like it, the gps system that runs on humanware products and isn't yet running on the system I want, good sound just for recreational music, and a little camera mounted over my hear or someplace else useful that didn't need to try to scan a newspaper just yet but would work with facial recognition software. Nice little comfortable bluetooth headset which is the one thing that actually exists now - one by plantronics with noise reduction REallynice. That one I probably will actually get.
If I were going to imagine it a bit more high tech it would also include bar code scanner with whatever it is that allows for scanning to be less precise than having to find the bar code itself and a camera that would work with a little optacon pad that would work like the optacon but with the processing inside my computer and the little pins a little less rough on the finger.
And while I'm recreating the old products into the new, I want the old Eureka system for writing music with that same little synthesizer to play it back.
This was about wishes, wasn't it?
that, it was.
if 35 wants to pm me about a eureka that i'd be willing to let go for next to nothing then feel free.
Ok here is mine.
More memore for my pc with 512 mb. would like to have at the mnoste 2 gb no less than 1 gb.
An icon from levelstar.
A voice sence from gwmicro.
A pac mate from fs.
A mac
A voice note mpower
Thats a small list.
Mmmm to post 35. I love your ideas! And I've never heard the voice on a Eurika though I've heard of them.
It was some weird girly type voice.
Changing the pitch was actually quite effective in ultering the gender of the speaker for the time that it was produced.
